Peek-a-Boo and Spooky Slot Canyons

Peek-a-Boo and Spooky Slot Canyons

On most Southern Utah bucket lists, you’ll find the local favorite one-two punch of Peek-a-Boo and Spooky Slot Canyons. These magnificent hikes, located in the Dry Fork area of the Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument area, can be done individually, but they make for a killer loop you can tackle in one afternoon of adventure. Once you’re in, all you have to do is walk through a scenic paradise of red and purple rock.

Mexican Hat

Mexican Hat

After passing the eroded mesas of Monument Valley, highway US 163 crosses 20 miles of rather flat landscape past scattered Navajo houses to Mexican Hat, a small settlement named after a curious formation nearby consisting of a large flat rock 60 feet in diameter perched precariously on a much smaller base at the top of a small hill.

The village itself is small, home to fewer than one hundred people and offering few facilities, but the surrounding scenery is exceptional and not often visited, featuring 1,200-foot sandstone cliffs at the edge of Cedar Mesa, deep, layered canyons of the San Juan River, vast sandy desert plains, and a wide valley studded with isolated red rock buttes and mesas.

 Estrella Mountains

Estrella Mountains

The Estrella Mountains are certainly a treasure in themselves but there's a story that more monetary wealth is hidden inside. A man named Don Joaquin led an informal mining operation in the area in the 1840s, hoping to find gold in the mountains' hills. He finally lucked out and was able to extract somewhere around 3,000 pounds of gold.

However, when the U.S. Army began patrolling the area, Don Joaquin and his crew packed up and began heading back towards Mexico but not without hiding the treasure first in a small box canyon cave nearby. Greed, though got the best of Don Joaquin's crew because they later murdered him and took off back to Mexico but without the treasure.

The Lone Ranger Rock

The Lone Ranger Rock

Anyone familiar with "The Lone Ranger" remembers its classic opening credits, as the masked hero sped along on his white horse 'Silver', through rugged Western territory, firing his six-shooter.

Then, with a his hearty cry of "Hi, ho, Silver!', his steed reared up on its hind legs, next to a uniquely-shaped rock.

So, you may ask, where was that "Lone Ranger" rock?  Is it still around to be found after all these years?

The answer is yes, it is.
